What are the 'bible of' type books on historical periods for a lazy piece of shit like me who's only willing to sacrifice so much time on the study of history?
I want some educated recommendations on
>pre-history
>ancient (egypt, greek etc)
>chinks
>romans
>byzantium
>dark ages
>medieval yurop
>medieval middle east
>medieval asia
>colonization
>ottomangs
>britbong empire
>19 cen France
>early days of US of A, civil war
I'm assuming 20 century history is an absolute clusterfuck so why bother

Don't say "wiki" we don't know what you are talking about. The wiki of the board in the sticky? Wikipedia? Another wiki?
>Hobsbawm
covers 1789-1991 with Age of Revolution, Age of Capitalism, Age of Empire, Age of Extremes. You can back up Age of Revolution with Carlyle's French Revolution for a more personal feel.
>Norwich
Byzantium triology by him or the condensed version (Short History of Byzantium) if you're really stuck for time
>Frankopan
Silk Roads
>Gibbon
Decline and Fall of Roman Empire
>really stuck for time
>Gombrich
Short history of the world
that's a couple thousand pages if you don't go the gombrich route

He's right and don't be edgy.
There's always Will and Ariel Durant. You should be able to find a complete set dirt cheap because nobody wants the bulky hardcopy anymore. Whatever they are asking for it, offer less; they'll take it in a heartbeat and be glad to get the shelf space back.
