I don't think that saying is meant to argue that photos are better than poems. I think all it means is that, for instance, it would take a paragraph to describe the photo you posted. Stanley Kubrick once said, "Description in the most boring thing in a novel." When it comes to telling you what somebody looked like, or what they were wearing, or what the room they were standing in looked like, words laboriously do what a photo would do effortlessly. Of course, that doesn't invalidate literature because literature is a lot more than descriptions of clothes and rooms.

you could practically deconstruct any picture however far down in reduction and in context youre willing to take it. i dont think a picture necessitates the same ideas merely through images. you show a child and critic the same photo, youre going to get two very different responses, which shows that it is not merely reducible to the image (sign) but the sense of which the image refers.

Sure, a picture of an orphan in a war-torn town may give you a faster, better, far more accurate description than someone describing it in words.

But that's not what I want from literature. I want to hear the thoughts of the author. I want to see the world through his eyes, or hers. I want to grow to know the author intimately, privately, although he may have lived in an entirely different time and place than I.

That and the hobby aspect. I want to read those thousand words leisurely to my entertainment since looking at pictures gets boring.
