Mmm. I've never seen Middlesex mentioned here. I've had a copy for a while. Been meaning to read it. What did you like about it?
>>
>>8626047
I prefer Palahniuk/Vonnegut-esque style narration. Bare bones phrasing that mostly sticks to visceral descriptions of the physical to set a scene, as opposed to purple prose waxing poetic about the character's different psychological states for three pages. Middlesex is very much on the purple prose side of things, but it does it so well that I found myself really enjoying and appreciating the narrative tangents digging deep into whatever symbol the author was using to try and describe an emotional state or make a point. I'm deeply opposed to that style in general, so I was really impressed with it being done so well that I genuinely liked it. Gave me a better appreciation for that style of writing. This was the biggest reason.

Other part was the general plot following a few generations of recent Mediterranean immigrants in Detroit. I'm from that area and thought he described that family history and that locale really well.

The narrator is intersex (androgen insensitive, I think), and the narrator also handles writing somebody who straddles the gender/sex boundary well. Also hit home for me.

I've been meaning to read Ceremony for some time now. What did you like about it?

I read House Made of Dawn a few months ago. Opening was shit, but the second half was fantastic. Really loved that book.

I won't attempt to rate, since all I've read is Beowulf, but I will heartily recommend Grendel by John Gardner.

>>8627571
Grendel is the shit. It covers similar ground to Wicked thematically, I was actually debating listing that one instead.

Ceremony is rooted in a worldview/religious system that says that time is cyclical. Everything has happened before and will happen again, we're all archetypes fulfilling old roles, etc. The narrative structure in the book is set up to track those repeating cycles instead of a strict linear chronological order, you can trace the mirroring duplicate events in the MC's own life and in different characters in antiquity/folklore while you're reading. It worked really well thematically with the MC's culture/religion, which is central to his character's arc.

General themes the book covers are interesting. Effects of war and PTSD. Trying to find peace with your (conquered) culture and (scientifically disproven) religion in a world that's completely oblivious to you/it, while your family is still making it out to be absolutely critical for you and them to adhere to. Lots of muh interesting symbolism floating around too.

Interesting. I hadn't heard of Wicked before, but I'll add it to my list and bump Ceremony up.

House Made of Dawn also dealt with PTSD, but on that front it focuses on trying to find a place and meaning in a world that never gave a shit about you but from which you've managed to become even more alienated.

have you considered the fact that a lot of people actually do enjoy those books?
>>
>>8637242
It's not so much convincing in imitating Old English as it is making you feel like you're reading something incredibly old. The first hour or so reading goes slowly, but as the plot begins to pick up it feels like your understanding picks up the pace of things as well. It feels very complete in terms of its otherness linguistically.

As for what I enjoyed so much about it, it's a story about a terrible person who thinks he's the hero of a very different story. The way Buccmaster of Holland grows more and more sure of his destiny as he becomes more and more unhinged made for a great (in my opinion) story

>>8637371
>are you 10 years old
That's actually probably about how old I was when I read those books for the first time, and why I love them so much now. Going back and rereading them every once in a while brings back good memories and reminds me of why I love reading so much.
You do realize you're allowed to enjoy things subjectively based on personal experience and enjoyment, don't you?

Shut up. Ready Player One is really good. More when you knew or at least played along with some of the 80's culture. Which I believe was absolutely amazing. It presented to me such nice gems i didn't knew before. Plus it's crude honesty is very nice.

I prefer William Faulkner view.

>“Read, read, read. Read everything -- trash, classics, good and bad, and see how they do it. Just like a carpenter who works as an apprentice and studies the master. Read! You'll absorb it.
Then write. If it's good, you'll find out. If it's not, throw it out of the window.”

While I agree that you should usually read as many good/great works, you need to read and watch mediocrity to fully understand why it did not work.
