Actually, IIRC, it started when Faulkner was reviewing a story by Hemingway, saying something like, "Hemingway doesn't have you running to dictionary constantly," and Hemingway was like, "Oh look at me, I'm Faulkner, I have to use big words to sounds smart," then Faulkner was like, "Wtf dude, I meant that in good way," and so on.
