Children picking up our bones

Contests and small magazines that publish bi-yearly or whatever. The latter is mostly a circle jerk; essentially the editor propositions their friends to send some work, or most people get in by name recognition, but you do get a good few from unknowns from the slop pile.

The first line really shouldn't be off meter. You don't have to stick to it throughout, but the reader is trying to get a grasp of it at the beginning, so starting off with trochaic tetrameter when the rest of the poem is iambic really throws you off. The first impression you make is that you don't know what you're doing.
