Don't romanticize it. It's stupid. By wanting to read books about an idealized experience you're only setting yourself up for extreme disappointment. The military is full of black women, it's incredibly PC, and full of little teenagers, primarily from rural areas in the West.

Don't fucking enlist in the military. Just don't. Go to school, get a degree, then get a officer's commission if you really want to serve your country.
And even then, ask yourself, "Am I ready to spend 4 years of my life dealing with extremely rigid structure and bullshit office politics and borderline retarded enlisted who only have a HS degree due to No Child Left Behind?"
