Why is slam such a celebration of self? Did it begin that way or did it somehow attract the kinds of people who need to make a spectacle out of their art therapy? I swear every slam "poem" I listen to is either rotten with victimhood or filled with obnoxious affirmation. Either way it's always a big fat "I" standing out and going through the same slam motions of sounding frustrated, getting indignant, and then sulking back. If there's a hugbox in the literary world it's no doubt fucking slam.
