The trial, especially the closing statements, is for me the most drawn-out part of the book, but the rest of the second half is good. It can't hold a candle to the contrast between the Grand Inquisitor and the high point of the book, the account of Zossima's life and faith

I just finished rereading it. I would still say Alyosha, but I was surprised how sympathetic Dmitri came across. I suspect it had to do with the translation* (McDuff), as Alyosha came across as much more irritable and impatient than I remember him, and Dmitri seemed somewhat more conscience-stricken and less licentious than I remember from before

Alyosha is explicitly presented as the 'hero' and main protagonist of the book, and the only one without murderous ideation. But otherwise I'm like you in yearning to be Alyosha but seeing more Ivan in myself than I'm comfortable with if I examine myself deeply enough
