Le Comte de Monte Cristo was my favourite book growing up so I'd say a very favourable opinion of him. That's the only book I've read from him although I know about Les Mousquetaires and so forth

He set the storylines and a friend of his did the writing. Very accessible, he got me into classics, he (referring to them both as one author) had a great influence on popular "feuilleton" magazines, romancing history. Take care of documenting yourself a bit before reading, his work is responsible for some of the biggest misconceptions in history such as Catherine de Medicis being a murderous cunt or Richelieu a manipulative jerk.
