psychoanalysis is still a strong engine for literary critique even if freud is nonsense. Theorists do a lot with his ideas as a general model rather than an actual explanation.

Even before I had ever read Freud I always thought it was fucking stupid when people made statements like this without having read Freud.
Now that I have read him I realize how absolutely butchered the general notion of Freudian theories are in modern casual discourse.
Freud is clearly very incisive and very patrician if you read any of his case studies or any of his theory papers. The Lacanian stages of psychological development is also fascinating. Fuck I hate ever hearing about Freud in a conversation because now it just triggers me when people say "LOL can you guys believe people like FREUD like I wanna fuck my mom right NOW HA I seriously don't at all! xDD"
