If you're defining Finnegans Wake as "unreadable" then the music equivalent is Merzbow's Pulse Demon (or 99% of his other albums).

Rock music is (or was initially) sneered at by academics who consider classical and jazz to be the pinnacle of artistic expression in music, and Trout Mask Replica is a challenge to that perception. So basically it would be like if Stephen King suddenly wrote an experimental novel or something.
