A work that deals with things like social alienation, dissatisfaction, identity, uncertain reality in a setting where internet or virtual reality of some sort plays a major part. With similar creepy and existential vibes.
I know there are probably lots ot sci fi authors dealing with these subjects, but I haven't read much beside Philip K. Dick, and what I read of him was mostly drug related, not cybernetic. The Girl Who Was Plugged In by James Tiptree kind of reminded me of Lain.

Have you read "A scanner darkly" by Dick?
Also I'd say Neuromancer , of course, and Snow Crash, in which the virtual reality is an important point and it's called "Metaverse"

A Scanner Darkly is a good one, but Neuromancer and Snow Crash are b-movie tier crap. Lain is comparatively a masterpiece and it's an actually intelligent show.

I don't agree, expecially regarding Neuromancer.
By the way what do you think about Accellerando, do you know it?
>>8583948
Completely unfamiliar with it.

I don't know your tastes, but I found it a really interesting pseudo-cyberpunk book...a part of it (and the most interesting one imho) is set in a virtual reality...sometimes is a bit confusing but not as near as Lain(that I should rewatch soon)

Neuromancer and Snow Crash completely killed any and all interest I had in cyberpunk as far as novels go.

absolutely nothing like it senpai.
What it IS like is Vonnegut without a self-censor.
Bleeding Edge, maybe.

Yes, the book is total garbage with 1 note stereotypes for characters, awful prose and dull plot. Nothing about it is actually good, outside le cyberpunk.

This is what fedora-wearing, reddit-using weeaboos actually believe
