An object, a scenery, a person, can be visually ugly, yet aesthetically pleasing.

It can also be the opposite: Visually pleasing, yet cause revulsion..

A face can at the same time be grotesque, yet intriguing.

Beauty, in faces, is often deviation for a certain standard. But the standard is dynamic and so what is considered beautiful changes drastically over time.

Some faces are just caught between two extremes. They are not mediocre, not average, they are in a transition from ugly to beautiful, or the other way around.

Thousands of girls have pretty faces, yet international top models often have very distinctive features. Some were looked upon as ugly as sin one day, but declared goddesses years later.

Even I can think of many examples, for example how Tailor Swift often looks repulsive, even offensive to me, yet sometimes she seems like the prettiest girl on earth.

A lot of people also said Cara Delevigne looks like a boy, how her eyebrows disfigure her face. Well, sometimes it seems that way to me, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes both at the same time.

This becomes even more apparent with porn actresses. Sometimes those things that are supposed to turn me off are what make a face unique.

Look at the picture provided. Her nose is clearly too wide, her lips too thick for her face. The eyes are very small in proportion to her slightly chubby face. All these deviations are what constitute her attractiveness, without them she would just be one face among millions.

I guess if you're a complete simpleton and prefer generic faces, like to eat at McDonalds, get all your inventory at IKEA and only like hyperrealistic pictures of landscapes then yeah, you will never realize that there beauty and ugliness can coexist.

As for the opening poster: The only word that sufficiently describes this phenomenon is ambiguity.

I find that describing a thing that holds two contradictory qualities is often impossible to do in one or two adjectival words, and this is precisely the proof of the negative structure of language. What is needed instead, in a case like this, would be a series of strenuous, dialectical sentences that seem to talk out of both sides of their mouths, strings of clauses that, one after the other, negate and upset the image painted by the one before.
