people really need to stop recommending finnegans wake, it's one of the stupidest books anyone can recommend. You're not actually going to have fun reading it, at most you're going to get some smug pseudo intellectual pleasure at thinking "gosh, it sure is great to have a book in my collection that only true patricians can understand, I know that I actually can understand it even though I can't prove I can understand it. It's just great to like books that plebs are too stupid to understand, am I right?"

No, I not that guy. But I can tell you it had a lot to do with UN sanctions on South Africa and Rhodesia. It got to the point where the Saffers' and Rhodies' only buddies on the entire earth were Israel and Portugal. Rhodesia lost their war because the rest of the world gave up on them after African nations sympathetic to the commies cried foul at the UN. The irony is that Rhodesia at the time was better integrated than about half of the United States. South Africa was a racist hell hole worse than any other Western nation, but the fact that Umkhonto We Sizwe were terrorizing white civilians complicated the situation. Still, we couldn't go ruin our public image in the world and lose ties with half of Africa, so we decided to cut South Africa and Rhodesia loose. Africa was too volatile a situation to get involved in, and we decided to foster diplomatic relations with other African countries instead of protecting the last bastions of the West on the continent.

>we decided to foster diplomatic relations with other African countries instead of protecting the last bastions of the West on the continent.
That was a shameful scuttle desu. Maybe colonialism was a mistake but turning the Africans lose on themselves and on any whites unlucky enough to happen to to be born on the continent was worse. The South Africans always said that the blacks were not "on the right civilizational level for voting rights" and it turns out they were completely right. And it wasn't even about human rights or democracy or any of that feel good stuff but simply because the coffers were empty and to continue to fight the Algerians or the Angolans or whatever was unnecessary overhead. They just offered this post-hoc rationalization that they did it because the blacks deserved equality and most people gobbled it up.
