I'm In desperate need of your help folks, I'm majoring in English starting from next October, there is this module called "linguistics" people say it's hard and all and I have no idea how to approach it, could anyone of you give me something I could read to sort of introduce myself to this subject, it'd be much appreciated.

Go ask /int/,
Also what the hell, why is everyone asking for help with school today?? I thought summer being over meant it was just NEETS left

This is good, but you don't need to read the whole thing. Just the chapter on Synchronic Linguistics. I mean it's all good and Saussure was a brilliant historical linguist, but OP's linguistics module isn't going to be examining the diachronic development of laryngeals in Indo-European dialects

Also, OP, it's hard to tell what that module will actually be, but probably it will just touch on a million different things without going into enough depth to be useful. But the greatest hits for these kinds of classes:
>Grimm's Law lol it's le fairytale guy
>Saussure lol here's a picture of the fabric of thought-space
>Chomsky tree lol colorless green ideas sleep furiously bro
>That fucking New Yorker article about Piraha and Daniel Everett lol Chomsky is such a retard
>Sapir-Whorf hypothesis whoa this will be super cool to talk to your friends about when you are smoking weed
In other words, you should just read a Steven Pinker book and you'll have an idea of what you are getting into and you'll be able to ask one or two interesting questions to impress the super hot linguistics girls in the class
>Well, according to Pinker...
Language Instinct is probably his most popular book, but Words and Rules is a better read
So you should read Words and Rules by Steven Pinker (inb4 jew meme)
Also, just a final thought-- the reason people say that module is hard is because it is English majors attempting to do rudimentary math.
