If you can read Portuguese, read Exortação aos Crocodilos. He considers it his best book.

Give him another try, but go with Kafka on the Shore, Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World, or After The Quake (short story collection)

i do think it's the most compelling of his 'short novels.' does not even remotely compare to hard-boiled wonderland, dance dance dance, wind-up bird, or kafka on the shore, though.

I found it cloyingly sentimental.
