Then again, wasn't Bowman kind of at the beck and call of the creators of the Monoliths? I remember in 2010 that he had a few responsibilities even as the Star Child, but I can't remember whether or not he was released from those duties afterwards.

So here's how I understand (or don't) what the creators are doing. There's a chapter in the book where he approaches the red giant star and there's the "space ship parking lot" with all of the old ships. I think that the creators search for intelligent life and give them powers, which they then return to their home worlds? They help the development of various forms of life across the universe.

I just finished reading the book, and want to read the sequels now
