The White Hall. A schizophrenic 28-year old gas station attendant in Daly City, California likes to walk around in San Francisco, California at night and smoke cigarettes and sometimes walks into apartment buildings he doesn't live in or know anyone at. One gray Sunday morning he walks into an apartment building, goes to the top floor which is an empty white hall with a brown rug between one apartment and the elevator lobby. The apartment door is closed but the man checks if it's unlocked and it is. He walks in. It's empty and it's being repainted. It smells like paint. The door closed, suddenly, his ears start ringing and he drops on the ground and starts convulsing. For a few days he has abduction nightmares. He returns to the empty apartment another Sunday morning smokes a cigarette and nothing happens. That night he still has an abduction nightmare. He talks to his doctor. His doctor changes his medication. He sleeps that night. But after that first night of sleep his nightmares return. He decides to stay the night in the empty apartment because he thinks its more peaceful there. He takes his sleeping bag. He sleeps in the empty apartment with the heater on. The next morning he eats Burger King on Market St. He can't stay at the apartment anymore so he goes home. There are some scenes where he's at Dolores Park and another where he's in the Presidio. The book ends with a scene where he gets on a muni bus from Market street at night going to Daly City after playing chess with some old bums at the Powell BART station.
