What is the best translation of the Iliad? I'm looking a for a more poetic version. I know there are many more literal translations but im really looking for the best read. Is it Alexander pope? Or fagles?

Lang, Fitzgerald, or Fagles
George Chapman.
Fagles is the fucking worst, stay away from that shit.

Seriously, you should read Fagles first. Unless you are trying to learn Homeric Greek, Fagles is the best way in. From there you can explore more poetic translations. From the five translations I've read, I can say unequivocally that Fagles is the best place to start,
Pope is beautiful but much more 18th century English than he is Homeric or Greek. I dislike it. Chapman is my very favourite, but no one but Keats should start there, If you want Chapman, go for the Wordsworth Editions copy,
Just finished listening to an audiobook of the Fitzgerald translation. Can't say how it reads but listening to it was a dream.

The new translation by Caroline Alexander is really good, was even raved about in The New Criterion.

I read Fagles as was recommended. It was so mundane. Not epic at all. I'll read Pope or Chapman next time.
