None, it's just a convention that varies from book to book.

Teleports, summons magical creatures
>Mage
Uses fire, frost and arcane spells, conjures foods and opens portals
>Sorcerer
The most battle-type of mage, all his spells are for combat.
>Enchanter

different etymologies
wizard may come from arabic vizier or maybe from ME wysard (i.e. a wise man -- the "ard" being the same as in laggard or drunkard)
sorcerer prob goes back to latin root for lots for chance (think someone using runes or bones to divine the future)
mage is related to magus, plural magi -- Persian Zoroastrian astrologers (and the dudes who brought baby Jesus stuff).
others like conjurer, enchanter, necromancer, the meaning is more transparent
thaumaturge is a good one meaning miracle worker
witch and wiccan go back to OE words meaning weak (referring to pliant types of trees and wood , I guess that witches used?)
