Bloom is really great as a guide for English literature, also for ancient literature since most of that are set in stone since forever, but when it comes to other languages/countries you should look for another critics opinions, his representation of Latin America, African literature and for Portugal and slav countries.

Anyone who really loves literature and want to see what the world has to offer, Brazil for example, he only mentions Drummond, ignoring Guimarães Rosa which is, arguably, one of the best writters from the last century and Machado de Assis, even tho he talks about Assis in another book, but still. The main point is, you can't expect a really fair list from just one guy
