I just wrote my final draft of a novel I've been working on for years. Its MC is a detective who was previously named Nick Valentine.
Then fucking Fallout 4 came out last year and had a goddamn detective named Nick Valentine. What the actual fuck.
There are no names that feel quite as right as that for the character. What do? Anyone else ever have a similar situation?

Wow it's almost like when you pick a quirky but clichéd name, someone else might've taken it first!!

Skeeter Valentine
Zack Haseltine. Make sure you go through the text in order to clear up any traces of Valentine; pay particular attention if anyone called him "Val" (can change to Haze) etc. With this alternative you maintain the rhythm of the last name if it's important. Zack easily substitutes for Nick. If you've got people deprecatingly calling him Santa you've got to make some other changes.
