In Frankfurt a small group of radical thinkers, united around Theodor Adorno and Max Horkheimer decided to constitute a critical theory of History and Society from the data given by the social sciences and psychology. Even after they were banned from Germany by the Nazi regime and migrated to the US, they still called themselves the Frankfurt School.

He established a distinction between the rationality of means (the rational of technology for example) and the rationality of ends (the reasonable human morality, for example). One of the tragedies of our time can be attributed to the contradiction between these two rationalities: it is fact that the most delirious projects (the great projects of Stalinism, the Nazi final solution) were concertized with rational means. But these usages of Reason shouldn't be enough to discard the bases of rationality in general.
