His nonfiction is great, his fiction doesn't rank.

The only people who could find the suggestion that either are anywhere remotely close to being the best, and not burst with laughter, are the kinds that are newish to literature and are informed mostly by /lit/.
Dhalgren and Infinite Jest are both merely okay, but aren't genuinely great novels.
