I've only read Germinal, and its just great, the way he describes the common people is superb and so full os honesty that makes you wonder how he knows so much of the human mind, the characters are so alive and belivable that this factor, by itself, justifies the time spent in this novel
Also the story is moving and probably will get you in some way or another

Any particular edition/translation you would recommend?
The only thing I read of Zola was something either against the determinism of Saint-Beuve or Hippolyte Taine or both (???) or possibly against Proust's refutation in Contre Saint-Beuve or possibly parallel to Proust and I have no fucking idea but it was pretty good!

Germinal is great and was a real page turner for me, which is very rare when it comes to "serious" books. If you pick it up you might find it hard in the beginning because of all the characters and the confusing way in which they are addressed, but if you persist you will be rewarded

i read Therese raquin it was pretty good
I've enjoyed almost all that I had read by him. In the Rougon series, the debacle, l'assommoir, Nana, and la bete humaine, were some of my favorites, but they all were enjoyable
