it's an early work designed specifically to appeal to, and capture, the sentiment of disillusioned german youth post ww2. it's "juvenile" in that it is based on the conceit that many youths have wherein they and only they/a select few see a deeper truth that is hidden from the masses. the world is superficial while only you are privy to some deeper truth - it's a common idea that runs through countless books and narratives. catcher in the rye, for a famous example.
not that there's anything wrong with that, nor do i believe hesse subscribed to such a simplistic worldview. but demian concerns itself with only describing this one kind of thought and lacks the all-encompassing and penetrating insight that is found in his later works.
all of hesse's works build upon previous ones in any case, so it's not at all strange/controversial to say hesse's works generally increase in quality as he ages.
