I genuinely don't understand this. I've always gotten the impression from video game novels that they are related mainly just in name, maybe drawing a bit from the atmosphere and style of the source material. I haven't bothered to read one yet because they just seem, whether they really are or not, trashy, low-brow, shallow, etc., like they have just been shit out in an attempt to cash in on fans' interest in the game series itself.

Are there any such books that are actually worth bothering with?

The Warcraft and Starcraft books were enjoyable.

The original books were fairly good. Gave more back story to the events of the games. I always thought Eric Nylund was the best writer for the series to be honest. I personally think his action scenes were more well written and believable than some of the other writers. The only newer halo book I've read was the one where the sanghelii meet the prophet race for the first time(can't remember the title). It was rather boring and the more interesting aspects seemed barely fleshed out compared to the somewhat boring and poorly written political caste system that took place in the book's present. Part of my dislike could stem from me largely growing out of Halo after the games went to shit, but if you enjoy Halo's story and want more of it then I would read The Fall of Reach-Ghosts of Onyx. I've heard the forerunner saga of books are decent but I can't bring myself to read them yet. Hope this helps you out OP.

probably not

Eric nylund books are must reads if you're a fan of the series.

Delves deep into the back story and lore of the games.

Fall of reach is probably my favorite with first strike and ghosts of onyx tied for second.

Wasn't a fan of contact harvest or the flood. The flood felt really boring and redundant to read since it was just the 1st game in novel form.

Is new blood good? Thinking of giving it a try since I love the odst''s in halo

I can remember them being pretty fun and cool, but I was probably 14 or so when I read them. Obviously I haven't read them in fucking ages, but as far as I can remember Ghosts of Onyx was probably my favourite. Quite feelsy when some of the characters die and how they describe the mass production of expendable spartans for suicide missions.

Ghosts of Onyx is the best one, any others are probably OK, except anything with Karen Traviss' name on it is garbage.

I always really appreciated the use of Abrahamic/Christian themes and religious terminology mixed with sci-fi in the games, but I don't think I could justify spending time actually reading video game books. Is there any normal lit like that?
