those who can speak french, do you think this novel is too difficult to understand for someone that got through L'Étranger? I also ordered Bel-Ami in french, which I heard is easier than Stendhal. Can I read it after finishing Bel-Ami?
also: amazon reviews show that some alternate version of the text has issues with wrong words, etc. Folio should be good, yeah?

If you read that, you can go with Stendhal no problem.
Great book too.

I think you'll have your own answer after reading Bel Ami. The language in Bel Ami isn't particularly difficult, but the sentence structure is more complex than L'Etranger. and will prove more of a challenge. Don't feel bad if you want to read a few more works more on the level of Bel Ami before you do Le Rouge et le Noir.
Folio should be fine, I've never really noticed an issue. They are pretty cheap paperbacks though, and come with the issues associated with that ie easily damaged, pages where it looks like they overinked or something, etc.
hm, I found this edition in an NYU course syllabus so i'll just take that as an OK on the Folio. I do have a Folio so I know they're kinda flimsy but whatever.

True, I will probably know better then. Would any Zola, maybe Germinal or La Bête Humaine be on Bel-Ami level? or if not can I get a suggestion or two?

That's the copy I have. I've used it on two separate occasions (once for a university class, and one for a casual reread). The text is very good, very clear and easy to read. It's a good size for a paperback too, just about the size of you hand.

It also has a good amount of endnotes and a good intro to Stendhal and the novel.

Not this specific one, no. Maybe the one you're eyeing is a different edition? Check the ISBN for good measure. This Folio edition is all French.

yeah will do.
