>I have this craaazy thing where I really want to do things I like and don't want to do things I don't like
Wow, real mystery there
Isn't that usually called being an idiot savant?

The problem is that the obsession or extreme interest usually has a narrower scope than what's actually productive or fulfilling. In order to truly develop an interest in something, you have to learn more and do more involving it that may not fall within the bounds of the obsession. Obsessions are too narrow minded for the most part and can control a person more than they control them.
Someone may have a natural drive towards something, but they may not like every aspect of that thing. Someone may love aviation, but they don't like studying air traffic law and regulations. Someone may like a certain period of history, but they don't like studying the tedious details of political life or economics. This is one of the most common reasons why people flunk out of their college dream degrees. They are crushed by the reality of what their particular interest is, and find themselves hating the subject as a whole and unwilling to do work because most of it falls outside their narrow scope of interest.
