The G.A.N.
By Philip Roth
You know, I liked John Grisham's "Bleachers".
It's about a college quarterback star whose career is cut short by injury and his return to his hometown years later to attend the funeral of his high school coach. The story largely concerns his coming to terms with failure with respect to what the town's expectations were, as well as renewing relationships with his old teammates and girlfriend. There is a description of the high school championship game that is especially memorable. Overall, I found it better than I expected for a Grisham excursion beyond "Lawyers 90210".
The Universal Baseball Association
Harold Seymour's quite good on Baseball. I also enjoyed Wiley Lee Umphlett's Creating The Big Game, which is about American Football.

Netherland by Joseph O'Neil. It's like a modern Great Gatsby with cricket.
