Are there any books that support or reject the idea of people being self-serving and selfish? I'd particularly like some fiction that discusses this.
As i grow older, i find it more and more difficult to believe that everything people do is for any other reason besides themselves. When someone does something good/noble, i understand their underlying motives as trying to impress people. When someone pays me a compliment, i search for a motive as to why they'd do that.
I don't want to end up bitter and cynical, but the more i learn about people and the world around, the harder i find it to keep a positive outlook at the actions of mankind.
The Gospels. Not even joking.
Or if you'd rather not take inspiration from God Incarnate, try one of the biographies of St. Francis of Assisi.
Atlas Shrugged
The Ego and Its Own may be a meme, but if you're looking for a defense of selfishness, it does a lot better job than Ayn Rand.
