What does /lit/ think of Bernard Cornwell?
entertaining genre fiction of no literary merit.
He's not Conn Iggulden memery, but he's no Colleen McCullough either.

Every single book is exactly the same, but that's what you wind up wanting from him. Sharpe series goes down like a bag of popcorn.

What exactly does this mean? Not arguing with you; I'm just a major pleb when it comes to literature (Public school wrecked my love for fiction at a young age.). How could an entertaining story with good character development and historical accuracy lack literary merit?

Never read either of those authors, but I gather Iggulden is another writer of historical fiction. Will look into them more.

I guess that makes sense given the sheer numbers of books he has written. I read OP pic related when I was about 14 and to this day I've never been so captivated by any work of fiction in any medium. Read the second two in the series and while they were great, there wasn't quite the same magic as the first one.
Didn't read the book in OP's pic, but I did read his one about Vikings invading, and it was boring as shit. Some individual scenes were alright, the battle scenes were great, the rest was shit. He likes history but he can't write.

Excuses, anon. Allowing any one or any institution to affect your love of books or fiction is weaksauce.

I bought this trilogy because it was cheap new hardcorvers. I want to read it but I can't make time for them. Have you read it? If so, tell me about them.
