the greeks
Homer
Non-meme answer: Thales.
Iliad -> Attic Drama -> Plato
Then you can expand to other writers.

>Thales
You can absolutely ignore this fuckhead, there are no writings of Thales that are extant.
Start with the sumerians
The Phaedrus

Pic related.

>Pope
Noooo no no no no
It's not worth it. And this isn't just my personal bias against Pope coming out: he feels the need to put everything into heroic couplets which requires him to change a lot of meaning and context. Do not read Pope's translation.
I've only read 2 translations fully through (Lattimore and Lombardo) and glanced at other translations, but Lattimore's is BY FAR the most poetic and well-conceived of English translations. Go with Lattimore.

I'd hesitate to recommend the Iliad first because it's a bit of a slog, particularly if you're going in cold. It makes more sense to read Plato or some tragedies first in order to understand why the Iliad was important.

It's hard to say. Since so many of the tragedies that are extant concern figures in the Iliad it comes down to if you want your reading of the Iliad to enhance your reading of drama or if you want your reading of drama to enhance your reading of the Iliad. Honestly the best thing to do probably would be to read the Iliad, then read some of the major tragedies, and then return and re-read the Iliad.
But yes, major portions of the Iliad are an useless pain in the ass.
