/lit/ meet-ups

This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

Thread replies: 329
Thread images: 27

Post your location and and see if anyone wants to meet-up to do /lit/ things in your city.

TORONTO:

A /lit/izen and I go to see plays every now and then.

Shoot an e-mail to [email protected] if you're interested.

We're probably going to see All's Well That Ends Well in Shakespeare in the Park or maybe something at SummerWorks.

I was in Madrid a couple weeks ago tho. Dope ass Hieronymus Bosch expo you got there. Dunno why 4chan thinks this post is spam.
>>
>>8373792

Compared to the small town I actually live in, it's interesting.

But compared to Edinburgh, which is where I grew up, it's pretty terrible. Despite being the largest city in the region there are very few cultural events or book shops there.

I wanted to go and see some classical music for example: but besides a few recitals there is almost nothing on this year. Compare this with Edinburgh where you can watch a Symphony Orchestra playing every week. There is also only one good second hand bookshop in the entire city centre.

Regarding poverty... well people will often stop you asking for money in the street, but the whole city is quite spread out so you don't see much poverty unless you go out looking for it. And even then I'd say it's far better off than the countryside around it- the town I live in has basically been in a state of destitution since the 80s.

It's the same one attached to Deep Vellum, but it's new isn't it? I mean, the publisher isn't all that old themselves.

I'm excited since it's got the kind of books I like best--literature in translation. They apparently focus on small and independent publishers.

Anyone from Czech Republic? Going to spend the next year studying there, would be down for some bohemian pub crawling through the entrails of Prague.
>>
>>8373525
Is that a yes?
>>
>>8374720

You need to look up a bar called "The Bulovka Bar" which is located near the tram stop 'Bulovka'. It's in the north-eastern part of town. Nearest metro station is either Palmovka or Kobylisy.

They brew their own beer there, serve very good food and it's not a tourist trap like most of the other ones in town.

You may want to get some familiarity with Czech before you go because the menu is not available in English, but I understand that the owner speaks German fluently if that helps. Depending on who is working, they may speak enough English to help you order.

A more adventurous option is a pub called Bar Chyse. It is in Cimice and you need to get there by bus. Make sure you arrive early or you won't get a seat, especially if the weather is bad.

If you are looking for some more expat type places: The Globe, The Tavern, Radhost (the restaurant). The entire neighbourhood of Zizkov is suitable as well. If you want something more authentic and less expat dominated, U Vodoucha and Nad Viktorkou are both great pubs in Zizkov.

New Town, Dejvice, Hradcany and the inner part of Zizkov are the most expat-friendly areas. Some nice parts of town that are less well known: Vysehrad, Krizikova, Karlin, Strasnice, Kobylisy, Smichov, Holesovice.

Avoid: Haje, Kolbenova, Hostivar, Prosek, Letnany, Strizkov, Zlicin, Cerny Most, or anywhere that isn't close to a metro line.
>>
>>8374795

Oh yes, and make sure that you live close to a tram line as well because it's a bitch to get around the city after midnight if you don't have one nearby.
>>

>>
>>8374817

Nope. I lived in Prague for two years, the first as a foreign exchange student and the second as an English teacher.

Unfortunately I never got around to visiting Plzen, although I went to a few other cities. You should try to visit Olomouc and Brno while you are in the Czech Republic, and also Wroclaw in Poland if you get the chance.

Yeah, we should go there and hang out.

I got all excited learning about the press because I have a growing bunch of short stories I'd like to collect into an anthology, but then I found out that they mostly publish translations. Oh well.
>>
>>8374966
Right, they're all about literature in translation. It's kind of like Open Letter Books. I wish they'd open up for poetry, since that's all I've been translating.

If I want to go to a bar and have a boring and typical experience I can do that, I'm not so desperate for a normal human interaction I'm seeking it out on 4chan; I want to get obnoxious drunk and do something annoying towards those smelly hippies and yoga loving sluts and fags with a bunch of weirdo strangers who want to talk shit about books.

>make plans to meet up with 3 people from /out/ and go hiking. trail is about 6 hours there and back.
>im picking everyone up
>didn't talk to any of them too much, in retrospect was probably a bad idea
>park outside first guys house and text that im there
>normal looking guy
>puts his shit in the back and sits there. like way at the back.
>its an 8 seater
>very awkward guy, mumbled a lot, that combined with the distance he'd put between us had me asking him to repeat himself every time he said something
>park outside next person's place, girl
>talked to her more than the others. she's really cool, average looking but very fit. sits next to me
>last person, his place was the most out of my way
>driving through insanely expensive looking area. every house is like a mansion or some shit.
>check to see if i got the right address
>i did
>park outside massive house and text the guy
>make convo with the girl for 10 minutes before he texts back
>"i might need some help"
>....................
>me and the girl go (awkward dude muttered that he wanted to stay)
>middle aged woman answers
>she looks very pleased to see us
>strong waft of gin coming from her
>"oh, you must be his new friends. come in!"
>as she's waving us in, hideous nasal voice hollers "LEAVE THEM ALONE MOM, THEY DON'T WANT TO BE BOTHERED BY YOU."
>look up to the top of stairwell
>oh god
>morbidly obese, scruffy man standing there, pig face scrunched up - affronted by his mother's audacity
>can see the shock on girl's face in my peripheral vision
>some context: this guy told me he was an outdoors "hobbyist" with experience, but not a lot. hes also 27
>mother is eyeing me worriedly
>nasal yelp, "can you help me with my things?"
>he has a giant rucksack and overnight bag
>..."you know this is just gonna be a day, right?"
>he waves me off, "dont worry ill carry it"
>skeptical as all hell, but im in a really awkward position. mother is looking at me plaintively.
>WHATEVER.
>we drive to the trail in silence, peppered with fat's useless try-hard comments ("the weather forecast might be wrong, it looks to me like its going to rain") and stupid unfunny jokes like "good thing she's not driving, i wouldnt feel safe at all" (?????????)
>we arrive
>he hauls his shit out
>say, "look, there's not way you can take all of this. just pick out the essentials"
>i can still hear his disgusting twangy voice, "these are pretty much essential. i already said you dont have to carry anything."
>ask if i can have a look
>he shrugs, "go for it"
>overnight bag has a fold out chair and table, doritos and cheetos and a ton of soda, a fucking tent. rucksack has $1000s worth of top of the line gear. if you're an /out/doorsman, you know how fucking expensive this stuff is.
>ask him why he bought a fucking tent
>"just in case it rains"
>it's the middle of summer.
>fuck it, if he's carrying it
>>
>>8377573
>im actually getting embarrassed typing this. i made a lot of bad choices.

>5 minutes into the walk, he's sweating so badly he looks like he just got out of a shower, he's squawking about his shin splints
>huffing and puffing, wheezing.
>we take a fucking break for him. it's been 10 minutes since we started.
>awkward guy isn't doing too great either - his fitness level is obviously shit
>we break for about 10 whole minutes. fatty drinks a dr pepper.
>we start up again, me and the girl who are ahead of the 2 losers hear them snickering. every time the girl looks back they snicker louder.
>we are making such awful time, walking at a fucking snails pace
>fat starts wheezing exaggeratedly, says hes having an asthma attack
>the three of us just stand around him in bemusement, waiting for him to stop
>he refuses to carry on, says it's not safe for him
>wait for it
>asks me to carry his stuff back down
>NHREB9UEWHF9
>i just want to go home at this point. his bags are drenched with his sweat and i experience a full body shudder as i start to carry them.
>drive fat home in complete silence, white knuckling the wheel.
>bang on the door
>mother answers (i feel pretty bad about this)
>i throw his shit through the doorway
>she looks miserable. doesnt even have to ask me what happened.
>drive the awkward guy home, get lunch with the girl recounting how much of a fucking stupid waste this was

obviously i was overdoing it with "worst weekend of my life", but it was definitely the most annoying.

I wouldn't have much of a clue. I view most expensive equipment as fashion shit on par with "technical fabrics".

I can see that the two bad dudes were not good on many levels, but criticising them for being out of breath and slower than yourself is a bit of a dick move. And not being more assertive and letting them wreck the hike when you seemed to know it would happen is something to work on. Not to defend them because they sound like twots, but at the same time you paint a picture of normie going into loserville and I don't buy you're not at least on the outskirts of loserville yourself.

I think it was /int/'s UK meeting that did this, and through a mixture of cat fishing, not really going out that much and shitty perceptiveness/sense of directions. They ended up posting about wandering around feeling awkward and finding nobody. Then a bit later there were some posts that like 3 met up and just sat around staring at their smartphones.

Not as fool proof as you might think.

so what? I love literature and I read a lot of it, but some of my good friends are high school graduates who do manual labour for a living. What do you have to lose by going? Are you worried we'll laugh at your lesser learning? Suppose we do: what's the harm in being laughed at a little? Vanity is something none of us need

If you know how to drink beer and laugh at other people's jokes, you're qualified to show up. The last thing we want to do is show up and awkwardly discuss David Foster Wallace anyway.
