Thinking of buying one to save money. What would people recommend?

I just bought a kindle today. Paperwhite 3. Oasis hella expensive. Voyage seems like no difference.

Nook glowlight plus. Same resolution as a paperwhite but almost half the price as the Kindle without ads and waterproof

I have exactly the same. Used it for 2 weeks. Really prefer reading on my laptop. The reader was very slow to operate. Plus pic related. I couldn't see the words clearly so I had to zoom. This meant for each line I had to use the arrows(yellow) because my field of view( red or green) couldn't include the whole line.

For all y'all who have the Kindle Paperwhite, or any latest generation Kindle:

I got a kindle paperwhite and I'm satisfied with it. I used to read e-books on my computer/phone and the kindle is just much easier to read for longer. I also really like being able to highlight/search/use the vocabulary builder, I'm always hesitant to write in my physical books.
>>
>>8372791
Got a Kindle paperwight. It's insanely good. The paper is very easy to read (easier than actual paper), it's light as shit, and you can stuff it full of gutenberg/pirated books as you want them. Other e-readers are probably absolutely fine too; I only got the paperwight because it was a present.

Don't "just use your phone" unless you're genuinely fine with that; the differences between phones and e-readers are huge.
>>8375552
Extremely easy. Use a cable or email it.
>>
Two options in my opinion:

1: buy an used kindle, kobo or sony to keep it as cheap as possible (nearly any model from these good manufacturers is totally ok for just reading books unless you really desire a built-in light, but my personal recommendation is to avoid models released before 2010 - Kindle DX/3 onwards is totally fine - K3 are pretty common finds for cheap-ass prices)

2: buy a new kobo glo hd/aura or kindle paperwhite/oasis for 100-250 bucks or whatever they cost today

My personal opinion is that these devices have not improved much in a long, long time, for their task of displaying text is extremely easy. Just buy from the big 2 or 3 manufacturers to make sure they're not buggy crap, avoid no-name chinese shit, other brands might still be good.

Having a built-in light is nice if you absolutely must read in darkness, but even those lit models are best used in well-lit conditions. Consider this a key point when deciding, pretty much all other upgrades since 2010 or so are negligible.

As far as Kobo vs Kindle goes: Kindle has a better and generally cheaper store, Kobo supports more formats without conversion, so really, decide based on whether you want to buy books from Amazon or not. Unless you're buying used; then base your decision on price and availability.

I also have a much older Kindle 2, but it's shown its age. My current set-up is great, also mixed in with my Marvel Unlimited sub and it's a reading paradise.

Truth is, I still buy physical books far more than digital. Fuck those prices, unless I can pirate it....

>>
>>8377003
Yeah. Personally I found that owning a Kindle DX is worth it solely for the improved PDF readability. I've saved money by being able to read certain relatively expensive books as PDF:s. Its old and slow, but the 10" screen is usually enough that I won't have to zoom around, so shit isn't noticeable.

>>8377500
>Fuck those prices, unless I can pirate it....
I hate it how my government actually taxes e-books more than physical books. 10% VAT for books, 24% for e-books.
>>
What place do you guys pirate from that has the most selection?

It's really hard finding some books and i'm even on private trackers. Making me want to go back to physical, because there is no way i'm paying for ebooks (considering they are often the same price or more and you don't actually own the thing)

>>8377561
>I hate it how my government actually taxes e-books more than physical books

Same here, helps contribute to the ridiculous price of ebooks compared to physical copies. Actually pay no VAT on printed books here, while it applies to ebooks.
>>
>>8372791
Kobo Glo fampire. Thing takes foreign files no problem, is incredibly usable and is generally just a non-amazon, slightly cheaper Kindle. I've never actually owned a kindle, but in store they didn't seem worth it.
>>
Doesn't Kindle lack readable formats? No fb2, no epub, no djvu etc.

>>
Why the fuck does the Kindle Oasis cost as much as it does? It looks exactly like the e-reader I want but not for 3x the price of the Paperwhite.
>>
>>8378703
It's an attempt to capitalise on the luxury high end e-reader market.

They probably don't sell many, and it's not important that they do. What's important is that no maker has a "better" reader than they do, because it's bad for perception - even if 95% of their customers are buying their cheapest model.
>>
>>8378713
Seems like a fair point.

And yea, It's hard to understand why some folk think kindled aren't the best e-readers out there.
The line seems like I can do everything I want to do with it (putting pirated books in) with no issues.

What could any other brand offer that can match in form, function, price, and reliability?
>>
>>8378815
Kobo offers more for cheaper than comparable Kindle models. Usually. They also support more formats without conversion and I think they allow more tinkering with fonts etc. Some people plain dislike Amazon and their ways so Kobo is neat for those.
Overall, the two are quite equal with few big differences.
Those two brands are probably The Best, though, no need to really consider others even if they may work as well. Others may have a better reader for a certain need (like larger size for PDF).
>>
I just use my phone that I already paid for that's fully capable of all of the things an eReader can do and more instead of spending $100+ on an eReader
>>
>>8378932
$100 is nothing. Its what, 3-8 physical books? You save that much pirating in a few months, tops.

Also: I don't know if I should envy or pity you for making do with reading on a phone. I'd hate that tiny screen and that backlight burning my eyes.

Hey guys i have 2 things to ask. Id appreciate it.

First one, as of late my kindle paperwhite has been having this glitch were it "page refreshes" on every page. Sometimes it wont do it but some days thats all it does, and when it does that it also gets a bit slower. Restarting it has done nothing. I read online that the heat might cause that to happen, but the thing is that i live in a place thats hot 24/7 so... perhaps its the use its been getting since 2013? Perhaps its dying?

Second, i plan on getting the newest paperwhite (3rd gen), i dont have to worry about being given a second or first gen one, right? Does it say in the description?

One last thing, do i have to uninstall and reinstall calibre once i get a newer paperwhite? I dont remember what it was it asked when i was setting it up, if it just asked for "kindle" or more specific.

To have another exact calibre library i just copy the calibre folder onto another computer and install calibre, right?

Thanks.

Guys I've been thinking of getting an E-Reader but I've gotten increasingly nervous of all information you get through technology. Specifically it's the Mandela effect that has scared me. I know the Mandela effect is mostly bullshit but it got me thinking of how easy it would be for a government or group to make slight changes to a book and after generations as people stop reading physical books and only have the E-Reader copy they start to believe the edited version is the original kind of like with the commandments in Animal Farm. Am I just being paranoid? Is this possible? What keeps this from happening with E-Readers?
>>
>>8379500
>What keeps this from happening with E-Readers?
Unless you buy everything from Amazon or some other single source, the fact that there is no single entity controlling all e-books. I've downloaded plenty by illegitimate means.

Good luck on the government to affect all - or even - most of those, especially without anyone noticing that the files change (and trust me, people running pirate sites etc do check this shit). There's a shitload of collective sharing going on.
>>
>>8379438

Ah, I wanted to ask that but I forgot, I can use multiple kindles / devices wth one library and it wont affect anything? Sweet.

Anyone can answer this, if youre lie me and you just use calibre and never buy ebooks, do you have your kindle registered? Have you ever sent yourself a book? How does that work? I know about the email and that you send it as an attachment. What do you do next, turn the wifi on and itll automatically pop up?
>>
>>8379553
So then if I download a book is it completely offline? But how do I know that before I download it it doesn't have a slight one or two word change to change the meaning of something? What if they keep doing that until they've eventually changed whole ideas in a work without people noticing. Isn't this already insanely possible with bible translations?
>>
>>8379587
Not sure if it was automatic but there's a menu button to sync everything. That'll do it if it doesn't automatically.
>>
Can amazon tell if youre sideloading books?
>>
>>8379588
You sound dangerously paranoid my friend
How do you go through your day without having a breakdown
>>
>>8379804
I'm sure there's a way to recognize if it wasn't downloaded from the device, but that shouldn't be an issue with pirated books as they have no way to prove you didn't buy it on a different device and transfer it over
>>
>>8379838

Best thing would be to just keep it deregistered and offline.
>>
>>8379804
Sure.

But "sideloading" is an official feature, so why care. Its not a crazy hack to transfer non-Amazon-bought books.

What did you think, that Amazon wants to prevent you from putting in files you bought elsewhere that are legally available for free? They don't do that and they sure don't care or have the ability to check what is legal on your device and what isn't.
>>
>>8379838
Well, they'd surely be able to check that this and that wasn't bought by you from Amazon (using that account). And they could sure check what books you have on your device; they allow syncing reading progress, notes etc between devices even on non-Amazon-books (so there is some data about them in the cloud)

But as I already said in another post, it doesn't matter, Kindles officially allow you to put whatever you want from wherever you want in there. I'd boycott Amazon on the spot if they tossed in a license agreement that prohibits you from using files acquired elsewhere.
>>
I was the "never will use an ereader" type but then i actually used one and realized how dumb i had been. The fact that you can have thousands of books on it, hard to find books, expensive books, all for free... is amazing. And sure, buying ebooks is okay i gues.. but i havent felt the need at all.

And i still buy physical books. You can do -both-.

I was the same...

I don't have an e-reader. I use a Nook HD+ tablet. The downside is the short battery (compared to the kindle) but I use textbooks in which the pictures and colour needs to be clear.

Just read the whole thread, it was highly interesting. Thanks everyone.

I got a tablet something like two or three years ago, one of my first actions was to use it to read books. My eyes did never hurt, but I spend all my day behind a screen (might be that). It is useful and I admit that I've never understood that whole Kindle thing. You guys made me curious, I will check. Also, I was really shocked by the price of ereaders (I did check before having a tablet). It is expensive if you know that you can do the thing with a tablet and more. But, I know that these are somehow better for reading just because they are made for this. I did not regret reading on my tablet.

My girlfriend gifted me one digital comic (Corto Maltèse), it was on Kobo. I did not find that practical between the loadings and the shitty zooms.

Anyway, I wanted to ask to the tabletfags and phonefags : what app are you using ? I've seen some names here that I didn't know about. I use ZoReader, which is ugly as fuck but you can add dictionnaries which I sometimes need when I read In English (which isn't my mother tongue, but this is obvious). So, any app where you can add a dictionnary please ?

Thanks to anyone who helps.
>>
>>8382347
They really are better. I was like you; never had a big problem with reading on my chromebook. But it's so much worse.

>>
>>8382347
with my phone and coolreader, whenever I want to look for a word, I just type it in google translator, since I always have a browser tab with that page open. I also read in english, not being my first language. It works for me. But I'd be interested in an app with built in dictrionary
>>
>>8382505
Thanks for your answer. I find it annoying to change app and go see for a word, and I do not need to do it often. That's why I'm after something with a dictionary option. As I said, there's ZoReader, but I hope that there's something better around here.

I used cool reader for ePub, then a recent update messed things up.
That brought me to Aldiko, it was good, was even going to pay for the premium app, but then I discovered Google Play books, it has all I need.

For local PDF I still use Document Reader, it's a compromise between Cool Reader's pletora of options and Google Play/Aldiko 's usefulness.

I prefer reading ePub over PDF since I can format the text with my preferences, but sometimes I can only get pdfs of certain stuff.

Kek. Never saw it that way.

Anyway, I have a kindle because books in my country are expensive as shit. I read something like 60 books a year so I can't afford it any other way.

Its pretty cool, I don't really care for the "real book" experience (the smell and all the shit everyone always brings up when shitting on e-readers), so it works well for me. I can see the charm in reading the real thing so its a matter of preference, I guess.

>>
>>8384929
>display size equivalent to book page, meaning no formatting bullshit and you get proper paragraphs
this isn't usually a huge deal, and I've used e-readers of sizes 6 and 10 inches. larger is sliiightly more comfy depending on book, maybe a bit more so when reading poems.

>high resolution display means sharp text that scales well to any font and can read PDF's or anything with images better
it still won't be as good as a regular tablet, but yeah PDF experience will be better than on most other e-readers. probably still not adequate if you want to use a lot of PDF:s, e-ink is just that slow if you need to zoom etc (which you probably will, even with that larger than average screen)

>E-ink means it can be read in natural light with no backlight as it absorbs light and does not produce glare
I wasn't arguing against e-ink, I'm saying there are no revolutionary improvements over older readers.

>frontlight means if you need a light, if reading in the dark, it does not shine into your eyes but down on the page
reading with only a frontlight feels pretty shitty, you want to use an outside light where possible. but yeah its a nice feature for the people who need to read in dark at times - or just to have in case

>large storage size means no problems with storing a bunch of books
doesn't matter much, books are tiny and no reader has that tiny a storage

>light, so it is comfortable to hold for long periods of time
well that kinda goes for all e-readers...

>will not experience slowdown at any time because of ram, and you will never have to worry about having too many books loaded
yeah this is getting into /g/ wankery rather than "reading experience". e-readers mostly ever display text, they don't slow down due to RAM limitations

nice if true, again goes for most since everyone uses a cover, tho

don't get me wrong its a nice reader probably, all I'm saying is that these devices all do the same, rather easy, thing, and all work pretty well for it. due to this I wouldn't spend that much money on a new reader but at the same time, 100 vs 200 bucks ain't a big deal when the device allows one to save so much money (on buying books)

Who else can't switch to and fro a Kindle reading the same book? It makes me sick

Is there a reason so many epub/mobi files have such bizarre typo errors? I'm reading a novel on my kindle and there are so many errors it is hard to read - for instance, in one instance a 'G' replaces an apostrophe.

Don't get books from shitty sources, I'm sure you can get a better formatted book someplace.

I guess the bad formatting is because of crap image to text conversion programs.

They keep selling out of the Oasis, it's the second best seller next to the paperwhite

I got a Kindle like almost five years ago. It still works fine and I only use it for stuff without copyright so it actually saves me quite a bit of money

Says who? Amazon?

What sources do you use, anon? Both torrents and the links in the sticky provide the same faulty text.

I'll occasionally read on my iPad. I sort of like it, actually. I used to read on one of the original nooks and that was great too, but the lack of light wasn't great.

is it many books? in that case you're possibly doing something wrong yourself

tell what book(s), whether you converted them and with what and how you moved them to your kindle

but I get all my pirate books from:
libgen (this seems to always offer the largest selection but I don't quite like the site)
bookz (I use irc all the time anyway so it is a very convenient way for me; otherwise there might not be much reason to)
what.cd (the selection ain't that huge but its just a nice site to use, usually there won't be no shit releases there)

basically though sometimes you'll only get shitty files, if its a rare book or something that no one just has produced a decent version of. but these are usually crappy scanned PDF, not shittily formatted epub/mobi, so hmm. hard to say since you didn't mention the particular book

PROTIP, get callibre for a hassle-free ebook format conversion.
