Precisely. To me they were exciting cause they got me into the mindset of the intended audience, people who only have a very vague idea of what a whale is shaped almost entirely off the Bible, maybe once seen an inaccurate sketch of one. The mindset when it was simply known that there were leviathan creatures stalking the oceans that could capsize a full size ship, and that these mad motherfuckers are out there taking them down with spears.
