Thats far from the worst tattoo ive seen. Dont particularly like it but its not on my arm and I wouldnt call it cringe

Cringe is 3 girls I know who had never read Howl by Ginsberg (one read the first page or so) getting a typewriter font "Howl" on all three of their ankles

Also the So It Goes variety and that quote from On The Road. Cringe tattoos IMO are impersonal trend images.

I could understand it to a certain extent if he did it with classics, because this would make him seem sophisticated, but YA? Why be a pseud about YA? It really goes beyond my understanding.

>>
>>8374159
these people believe it is the *book as object* that is precious, rather than valuing the text itself. same reason they don't do ereaders. quantity>quality
>>
>>8374171
Not only that, but all of these books that they are buying are reasonably expensive, clean, first hand, first editions. None of these booktubers are buying second-hand. Instead, they always have to buy the deluxe edition with the glossy covers and extra accessories, all for the benefit of nobody, since they're not even going to read it. I think one can ably describe this as 'Conspicuous Capitalism'. These women could buy less tacky clothing, or something they're actually interested in, but instead they're buying these books, not because of their contents, but because they'll receive virtue-points from people who think they're intellectuals. These books might as well be handbags or clothing (or the rent for their own fucking apartment), and in another they would, but people look down on others who wear nice clothing. Buying books is virtuous, reading optional. We're the worst, and dumbest generation in history, and have the gall to look down on our forebears.
>>
>>8374238
>We're the worst, and dumbest generation in history
People born in 840s Ireland were far far worse. We're actually only the 7th worst ever.
>>
>>8374238
100. I think they have the same experience going into Waterstones (Barnes & Noble in US?) as a normal person does going into a cathedral or major civic building; buying the books is again a means to an end.

Even when they go to Waterstones in their gaggles, they are so obnoxious and have inexplicable valley-girl accents.
>>
>>8374247
Implying my ancestors had a comparable lifestyle available. They did what their material circumstances compelled them to do.
>>
>>8374270

>>
>>8374261
This. Working in Eason (like an Irish Waterstones, don't think there are any in Britain outside NI) I see these people spend Ā£50 on 4-5 books. The money they are throwing away on books that could be bought in any number of charity shops really irritates me. It is, as you said, a means to an end.
>>
>>8369410
It takes half an hour to read one of those, or she probably just skims over to talk like she had read it without doing it so. Most people I know who are into YA just hoard them and never get to actually read it.
>>
>>8371977
Here's the reasoning behind his mess. He's a book collector. Not a reader but a collector. This prompts more questions than it answers but here it is:

https://youtu.be/O7xuWhq1Tck
>>
>>8374643
The collection grows, the hairline recedes.
>>

>>
>>8374673

>>
>>8374683
It's beyond me. You're not going to impress anyone outside of this self-contained circle, so why even bother? Why not pretend that you're really into classics, like us developmentally challenged literature fans? At least that will make you seem sophisticated.
>>
>>8374683
They might get money to promote those books to their audience of teenagers.
Even if they don't get money from publishers or whatever there is definitely more of an audience for YA shit on youtube than reviewing actual good books or classics.
>>
Looking at my own bookshelves with the clusterfuck of editions that don't match and worn spines I feel better.
>>
>>8371977
>that part where he is jumping around on the bed and saying "books. sleep. books. sleep." repeatedly

YA books that are neither Dystopian nor Fantasy. Usually books that are set in the modern world
>>
>>8376564

It was a srs answer, I thought you would be able to get the meaning implied.

If you are too worried about breaking the spines of your books, you are putting too much importance in the material aspects of owning a book.

Of course there's nothing wrong in taking care of your books, but going to such an extent as to "obsessively make sure" to keep them at mint condition is overkill. It's just so good to get intimate to a book, break through it, leave your marks in it just as they leave theirs in you, and you might be missing out on that feeling.

You hit the nail right on the head. They don't read them.
If you read, let's say, Pynchon, you'll get burnt of his style after one maybe two books and woul like to switch it out to something else like Vonnegut or BolaƱo.
Either they aren't reading the books which would explain the effort on making the covers so glossy and shiny, appealling to the eye or they are so void and empty that your brain doesn't even recollect ahving read anything and they can keep going without any type of moral fatigue.
If it's the second then maybe YA is the best for people who actually enjoy reading for reading's shake.
