Is there any point to even reading Herodotus? The conclusion I've come to is no. Its boring as shit, long, and only has a few interesting parts that can actually be counted as history. Most of it is mythology or other random bullshit like ancient geography that has no meaning to the average person. You can learn more about the Persians and Greeks through modern books that address the subjects much more thoroughly, and without the mythology and other bullshit.

He's not doing modern historical research. He's doing "historia" (inquiry) into causes.
Herodotus still serves as the primary, and often only, source for events in the Greek world, Persian Empire, and the region generally in the two centuries leading up until his own day.
Also it's fun to read.
So are you supposed to read Histories directly from front to back sequentially

It isn't a good book to read cover to cover. The geography passages are interminable, particularly whenever he is discussing rivers.
The good parts are the mimetic passages where he is ascribing words to historical figures. There is humor, pathos, and fables in reading about how Cyrus conquered the land, Croesus Of Lydia's greed and humbling, Cambyses hubris and madness. The account of Darius' ascent to the throne is a bona fide action thriller.
The account of Scythian history and their colourful customs is also very strong and true to history, as well as the recollections of Marathon, Thermopylae, etc.
It is a case of separating these moments out from the geography and genealogical sequences (I don't think Herodotus even liked these parts but he felt a duty to be comprehensive.)
So read Herodotus for the colourful stories, some of which may be true. The falsehoods still carry truth because it suggests Greek attitudes.

Read carefully the above passages and reflect upon them as you let the regret about your wasted life seep into your soul. Copy them into your suicide note so that your loved ones, relieved as they may feel, be not too baffled as to your motives.
