Hedonistic consumerism is too enticing for religious extremism to compete with on any meaningful scale. They have already lost.

nothing happened. they were just comfy and had values that lead to accomplishment. obviously they weren't that smart since they lacked the discipline to maintain it. they serve as an excellent example of what to strive for and what to avoid.

You are right, phrasing it as the 'decline of religion' would be more appropriate. Sure, Islam is growing when compared to other religions, but that doesn't mean much.
