In general paperbacks unless the hardcover is the only avalable, is a classic book that is either very old or translated and hardcover is the only aesthetic edition of the book, or if the cover isn't some tasteless/gaudy fedora-tier old-world style binding.

I like how small hardbacks feel and how they're durable, but there is a point at which hardbacks get a bit too cumbersome (picture related - the hardback one is a translation, the old softcover I got from my mother).

To clarify a bit: for that translation, the huge size might be the only workable one, though, so it all depends on the book and the edition. There are something like 5000 footnotes, fitting ~6 of those on every page would be hard if not for the big size.
