What's the scariest genre fiction book you've read?
I just read a short story that kind of shocked me.
I'm not ready to talk about it.
I'm sure you'll understand.

It was called, "The Doll-Master."In thinking about it, what tricked me was while the story was being told in 3rd person, it very much focused on the perspective of the "troubled" person. It would be assumed that would be the most interesting aspect, so I didn't anticipate any abrupt surprises. But what the author does, very late in the story, we suddenly see the physical reality through a "sane" person's eyes. Up until then, of course the main character was deluded and saw what he was doing through rose-colored glasses. We see the thread from childhood to adult. It seems reasonable at first, then shifts to unreasonable and we see that he's serious trouble. But the hard crimes aren't specified, because he's seeing them weirdly. Abruptly, a character steps in on his private scene and the troubled person as well as the reader sees it through the new person's eyes. It's horror, and then...it's rather abrupt and unsettling. It's more unspoken than spoken. That's why I liked it, because of my over-active god damned imagination.
This short story was a little bit unsettling at the star but the end still gives me nightmares.
The Dunwich Horror made me scared quite a bit.
