Hedonism doesn't work because no one besides the filthy rich .0001% has access to all the pleasures of the world.

If you dedicate your life to hedonism as a middle classer, there'll always be something more that you're missing out on and by the end of your life you'll feel empty and won't be remembered for shit. However it can be worked into your personal goals if you want it to by climbing the socioeconomic ladder so that you and your kin can enjoy more pleasures than you initially had.

If pleasure didn't diminish over time, it might be a tenable worldview. It is unfortunate in the sense that 90% of your life becomes a mere means to an end for the remaining 10% of your life if you follow it to its logical conclusion. Unless you were just born into some amoral moneyed family and can just spend the rest of your life doing drugs, even as your resistance goes up and up (and consequently the expenses involved).

I guess this is the reason why spoiled rich kids are all brain dead nihilist drug addicts.

Hedonism only had logical precedent before psychology and neuroscience taught us how pleasure and reward function over time. The idea of seeking the most pleasure for an extended period of time is fundamentally incompatible with our understanding of diminishing returns, and the idea that human nature seeks only pleasure rather than pain has been dispelled for quite awhile.
