Redpill me on subvocalizing, /lit/. Is it just a meme trick for idiots who think you can become a billionaire over night, or a legit and obligatory method of reading and uderstanding a text? Can you really read a book properly just photographically?

Meme
It's something that new readers do, but that has to be lost if they're to read any faster.
it's real.

how funny is that illustration
If I'm reading epic poetry why would I not want to sub vocalize? Surely not doing so is also detrimental to the power of the prose?
>>8330855
It's a meme. Everything I have read on it says you'll lose a lot of reading comprehension, it's a lot like skimming in that sense.

Wait, what exactly is subvocalization? I always thought that it was just when you hear your own voice in your head while reading something.

That is subvocalization. The meme is that it's possible to not do it, which has been proven false by countless experiments.

If you're reading poetry you should be vocalizing, never mind the sub.

So this is how Sebastian does it.
Sub-vocalization is like manual breathing for me. I never do it unless someone reminds me that it's a thing and then I do it for like 20 minutes until it goes away naturally.

I read every sentence out aloud because I haven't spoken to another human being since they invented self-checkouts.
