How do you feel about books that have pictures in them?
lots of great authors utilize images in their texts. first that comes to mind is Vollmann who does it well, but i know i've experienced others.

Can be fun, in their own way, but they're only in their own way. I've never read a (non-children's) book that used the pictures, rather than just having them for decoration a la Robinson Crusoe.
What about William Blake?

Gustave Dore's Inferno illustrations are absolutely GOAT, no question whatsoever.
Donald Barthelme does it pretty well.
