I thought Purity really came together in the last half, but it's nowhere near as good as Freedom and The Corrections. It felt like everything was backstory. Best chapter was Tom's memoir.

I thought it was a bit of a contrived mess, like the worst parts of the corrections (chips second half) but the whole book.

There were some good parts, the family drama. But the global intrigue always destroys my willing suspension of disbelief when it comes from Franzen.

Still, that scene... [spoiler/] I'm gonna fuck you in the ass [/spoiler] yikes. Intense.

it's my favorite franzen by a mile. second favorite is strong motion, though, so i realize my tastes aren't the norm. I think Freedom is (relatively) crap.
