I finished reading Dubliners by JJ and after each short story I would google its meaning on Sparknotes.

I've done the same thing with all of Steinbeck's short stories and mark twains.

How bad have I fucked up? Is it stupid to do this if I want to fully grasp the stories?

Do you do it?

This is how one reads deeply. Looking up critical angles on the literature you read is important. I would only suggest looking into sources other than Sparknotes due to its tendency to oversimplify things - but I can also understand the use of Sparknotes out of sheer convenience.

Using tools to understand can be helpful. If you come to rely on it, such that it hinders wither your enjoyment reading, or your own ability to reflect on your reading, then I would say you should cut back and only turn to it when you need particular help. On the whole, though, I'd say it's better than reading without understanding. Just think while you read.

You could probably just look up "critical essays on x" on Google and find some good stuff
Also, certain editions of books like Norton critical editions and Oxford world's classics often have a lot of criticism in them
