People used to mimic "the masters" as standard artistic training; this was seen as high art itself. We now take a more opposite approach.

People writing fanfiction are left with only un-literary motivations, ex. plot (shipping, head-canon, &c.).

It seen as poor form if it's done amateurishly or if you're imitating something that's deemed unworthy of imitation, both of which are almost exclusively the case when you're talking about fanfics.
