you'd be surprised at the occasional quality book to be found at your local goodwill for 50 cents. But since I've moved to the city there are plenty of cheap bookstores and libraries to get what i need

Goodwill has some gems from time to time. But I usually go with my local used bookstore run by two crotchety old ladies or Amazon used. Rarely buy new.

i go to my local library twice a week and snag a couple from their free 'friends of the library' shelves. Then I go to the library's 50 cent used book sales every three months, powells, and amazon

mainly charity shops. there are a couple of oxfam shops not far from me and a couple of british heart foundation shops that have big book sections.

there's one local bookstore I can't be bothered to go that has a used/clearance section filled with literary classics for like $1/$2. I wish I got bring myself to take the 20ish minute bus ride but... eh.

There is a kiosk selling books for less than a dollar next to the hospital where I go.So many gems there.
There is another one at the square halfway home.They sell higher quality stuff for around 3 dollars a book.

AbeBooks is the absolute best. No $3.99 minimum with shipping for orders. You can get most classics for $2-$3. Shipping is slow but I paid $36 for what would have cost $110 on Amazon

betterworldbooks is the best, ive used all the other major ones from book depository to abebooks. I just shop bargain bin at betterworldbooks and get hardcovers in good condition for 2 dollars a piece.

I got banned form my local bookstore recently so I've had to order off amazon.

>toss them onto the counter in a radial formation, all facing directly at the cashier, a slightly overweight girl in her early 20s

I tend to buy books on Amazon because I tend to keep up with authors' new releases. Also I just prefer to have new books in general.

Generally all I buy is non-fiction (ergo, science, math, non-continental philosophy), so I only buy a few books a year.
