Where do you buy books? I get mine from thriftbooks. Is there a better option?
>>
>>8310588
Local Half Price Books and Amazon.
>>
>>8310588
Mostly Amazon. All the stores around me are way too expensive even for used books.
>>
>>8310588
Half price books and thriftbooks for specific stuff i can't find at HPB
>>
you'd be surprised at the occasional quality book to be found at your local goodwill for 50 cents. But since I've moved to the city there are plenty of cheap bookstores and libraries to get what i need
>>
>>8310588
check your local thrift store. i remember buying a hardcover copy of war and peace at one for $3 when the retail price of it was $40. it was in fantastic condition too.
>>
>>8310588
>buy books

I live in a socialist paradise where the state owns all the books and the taxpayer foots the bill so I can read them at no charge.
>>
>>8310660
Goodwill has some gems from time to time. But I usually go with my local used bookstore run by two crotchety old ladies or Amazon used. Rarely buy new.
>>
>>8310588
Local thrift stores. Honestly I could go to value village everyday and get something new. The rotation is incredible.

Looks like you've never been to Cuba.
99% literacy rate sucka!
>>
>>8311862
I'll have you know my country used to be at war with Cuba
>>
>>8310588
i go to my local library twice a week and snag a couple from their free 'friends of the library' shelves. Then I go to the library's 50 cent used book sales every three months, powells, and amazon
>>
>>8310588
mainly charity shops. there are a couple of oxfam shops not far from me and a couple of british heart foundation shops that have big book sections.
>>
>>8310588
there's one local bookstore I can't be bothered to go that has a used/clearance section filled with literary classics for like $1/$2. I wish I got bring myself to take the 20ish minute bus ride but... eh.

>tfw you will never live in a cozy apartment above a cafe in Havana
>tfw you will never write government communist propaganda pieces by day while writing amazing literary fiction by night to be sent to the USA in secret
>tfw no darkly tanned cuban girl that visits only a few nights a month and never announced to continue your loving affair together against the knowledge of her overweight alcoholic husband
>tfw never waking up the next morning to a perfume scented note telling you she will see you again and to not forget her, with love
>tfw never keeping in the breast pocket of your linen shirt as you sit in in your panama hat while sipping your morning coffee at that downstairs cafe watching the old cars drive by
Makes me want to kill myself if I'm being honest

stop...
>>

the goodwills around my place suck but in general thrift stores can have good finds. its where i got my copy of Grapes of Wrath
>>
There is a kiosk selling books for less than a dollar next to the hospital where I go.So many gems there.
There is another one at the square halfway home. They sell higher quality stuff for around 3 dollars a book.

Bookdepository for the english stuff.
>>
AbeBooks is the absolute best. No $3.99 minimum with shipping for orders. You can get most classics for $2-$3. Shipping is slow but I paid $36 for what would have cost $110 on Amazon
>>
>>8312061
watch out for that ice-nine apocalypse my dude
>>
betterworldbooks is the best, ive used all the other major ones from book depository to abebooks. I just shop bargain bin at betterworldbooks and get hardcovers in good condition for 2 dollars a piece.

I got banned form my local bookstore recently so I've had to order off amazon.
>go to big chain bookstore
>pick up Mein Kampf, Lolita, and The God Delusion
>waiting in line for ages
>light up a stogie
>start loudly chatting up old ladies and families in line next to me
>thumb through the expensive knick-knacks next to the checkout, knocking several onto the floor, and repeatedly tell my fellow line-goers to “look at all this horseshit”
>complain that there are too few cashiers per customer, allege that this is the fault of “kikes”
>finally reach the checkout
>array the books so their covers are all facing up
>toss them onto the counter in a radial formation, all facing directly at the cashier, a slightly overweight girl in her early 20s
>she looks down at them and pauses, her jaw dropping in disbelief as the fuhrer himself stares back up at her
>blow smoke into her face and ask “some kind of problem, toots?”
>she coughs and nervously stutters the name of the book, as if to verify that someone could ever purchase it intentionally
>“yeah” I reply, before placing my index finger on the cover of Lolita, and leaning across to her side of the counter
>“and this one’s about a pedophile”
>her face is now wan with shock and horror
>“oh my god,” she mutters
>“God’s dead, honey”
>everyone around us goes dead silent
>pick up the books and leave without paying
>no one even calls security

I tend to buy books on Amazon because I tend to keep up with authors' new releases. Also I just prefer to have new books in general.

Generally all I buy is non-fiction (ergo, science, math, non-continental philosophy), so I only buy a few books a year.

Thanks I stole it from some guy in 2015
>go to dad's funeral
>they it's an excuse to dress classy- trilby, brogues, sunglasses, bowtie, the works
>As I walk up to the service, I see several of the guests comment on my handy walking cane and copy of the god delusion
>my mom asks me to say a few words in my dad's honor
>"He no longer exists. It is indubitable fact that the so-called soul is merely an illusion as are all qualia and non falsifiable "phenomena." But, my young audience listen! And listen well! Perhaps his nonexistence is preferable to any phony God's concept of heaven or hell!"
>mom looks nervous, waves for me to step down
>I smirk, put my shades back on, and light my cigar
>"Yeah, God's dead kid. Hmph."
