Gargantua and Pantagruel aren't original characters (do not steel) made by Rabelais on his deviantart. They were popular figures of tales in France at the time, not necessarily presented as being related or even being giants.
He basically took two popular characters and wrote his fanfiction with them and now they're known because of him.
The same happenned with the Roman de Renart.
