I enjoyed all the books. Feast was slow but it introduced a lot of new view points, such as the Ironborn, which was interesting. Dance was a bit of a slog til the quarter or so of the book but was enjoyable overall. The first three are incredibly fun to read; especially Storm, which, despite being around 1000 pages, feels like it's going at breakneck speed.

My only issue with the series is George's prose (and even then, only occasionally). For example, it feels like every second chapter has half a page dedicated to telling you what food is in front of the character.

Food is important to human culture. Food also provides characters something to do (take a sip of wine, nibble on some lemon cakes, etc..). George is building an atmosphere and giving the readers a glimpse of what the character might be feeling.

I think its might be because with the Game of Thrones series Martin took heavily from English history.
Norman Conquest=Aegon's War of Conquest
House of York=Stark
House of Lancaster=Lannister
King Richard I- Robert Baratheon
King John I-Renly Baratheon
Geoffrey II-Stannis Baratheon
Norway-Iron Islands
Wales-Vale of Arryn
Hadrian's Wall-The Wall

The list goes on and on to the point where without the dragons and magic its just another historical novel of English history but with characters and events put together haphazardly.
Its unoriginal to the point that if your a history buff you can guess whats going to happen and probably get it right. People have praise Martin for his world building in the series but the job was so easy because its our world.
Sometimes the writing feels like its trying to be edgy wanting to give off a grimdark feel but fails time and time again. He wants also to go for that gray line of no one is good or evil to the point that he kills off his villains before they can really do anything productive.
Don't even get me started on the porn writing. I've read some series where it feels like author just want an excuse to write fight scenes. AFOIAF at times seems like an excuse for a perverted old man to write porn.

I have a feeling he won't even go with the seven planned novels anymore, look at how he mapped out the whole War of Five Kings event which grew too large and then he extended it to seven. I think he'll go with eight and beyond until he dies. Or maybe he could conclude the current storyline in ADOS and just do stories or novels set in Westeros afterwards.
